The first steps to setting up your WordPress website.

Put out the welcome mat, it’s time to invite people to your new online home!

Or it will be time to invite them soon, once you have it set up nice and cosy with your Branding. First things first, though, you need to do a little housekeeping.

Building an online home for your Brand Personality on WordPress can guide your customers through the buying process. You can even make it feel like a place that you LOVE. But there are a few necessary things to do before you bring out the decorations.

If you read my previous posts about why WordPress.org, you know that I recommend it to all my website and blogging clients, because the capabilities of WordPress are limitless.

I also really love the fact that it’s the trusted choice of so many brands and businesses, and that anyone can contribute to the library of themes and plugins (which is why there are so many!).

There’s a little bit of a learning curve, as you might know, when it comes to using WordPress.org.

Of course, you can make yourself a home to share your Brand Message, but you may not know how to do that or where to even start.

The following video will show you the first steps that I do every single time that I install WordPress on a site of my own and even on clients’ websites. Of course there’s much more to it than this, but these are those essential things to get done right away that will set your website up for success right from the beginning.

Doing these few things may not be as fun as organizing a bookshelf in your actual home or figuring out what pictures go on your wall, just like it won’t be as fun as adding your favorite fonts and colors. But it has to be done!

Watch this video to see the first steps I do every single time I install WordPress:

Now that you have WordPress installed and the basic things done and out of the way, the next best step is to choose a theme for your WordPress.org site.

You may already have one in mind, but in next week’s video I’m going to walk you through how to choose one and provide some examples for you.
